Omegle text chat, and how to have one now
Before it had a camera, Omegle was a text box and a stranger. A lot of people preferred it that way right up to the end. Here is how that mode worked, and how to get the same kind of conversation on this site.
It started as text only
Omegle launched in 2009 with no video at all. You pressed a button, and a line appeared: "You're now chatting with a random stranger. Say hi!" Video arrived a year later, but text mode never went away, and for a lot of regulars it stayed the main event.
The other line everyone remembers is the ending one: "Stranger has disconnected." No reason, no goodbye. Most conversations finished that way, and people got used to it.
Two things text mode had
The interests box
Before starting, you could type a few interests. If someone else online had typed the same one, you were paired with them instead of a completely random person. It was the closest Omegle came to choosing who you talked to, and it worked better for common topics than obscure ones.
Spy mode
A text-only variation with three people: one person asked a question and watched two strangers discuss it, without being able to join in. It was the one place on Omegle where a conversation had an audience.
Why people picked text over the camera
Not mainly shyness. Typing gives you a few seconds to think, which makes it easier to be funny, or to talk in a second language, or to chat from a place where you cannot speak out loud. It also filters for people who actually want to talk: a stranger willing to type full sentences to you is usually there for the conversation.
The trade-off is speed. A text chat takes longer to get anywhere, and it ends more easily, because closing a tab mid-sentence feels like nothing.
How to start a text-only 1v1 here

Open the match screen
Press Start a 1v1 anywhere on this site. There is no sign-up form to fill in first.

Switch it to Text
The screen opens on Video. Tap Text before you start — this is the one step people miss.

Start
You are paired with one person in a message thread. You see their photo, country and language before either of you types.

Stay in text, or don't
Voice and video buttons are in the thread if you both want them later. Nothing switches on by itself.
The first matches are free. After that some features use credits, and the price is shown before you spend any.
What is the same, and what is not
This is not Omegle, and it would be misleading to pretend the text mode came back unchanged. Some of it did. Some of it deliberately did not.
- Two people per conversationNobody else reads the thread.
- Typing as a complete way to talkNot a waiting room for video.
- Leaving is one tapEnd the chat any time, no explanation needed.
- Spy modeNo third person watching two others. Every thread here has exactly two participants.
- An area without rulesOmegle kept one on its video side. There is nowhere here where the rules are switched off.
- Total anonymityThe other person's photo, country and language are shown, and you can report or block someone.
